THE TOLLER

The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, or short Toller, is the smallest of the retrievers. The full name is well describing their ability to lure waterfowl within gunshot range and is difficult to translate into German languageThe name also indicates that the breed originated from southwestern Nova Scotia, Canada, where they were used for duck hunting at the beginning of the 19th century. The breed is famous for to be engaged and with high-energy.

Out kennel name Anpaytoo means „bright“. If Mila is working out that is exactly what her appearance is like.

Toller are named for their ability to entice or lure waterfowl within gunshot range, called "tolling". They play near the water to attract ducks or geese and then, if the hunter has shot, to retrieve the downed birds. Therefore the Toller is required to quickly switch from “playing” to “work” mode.

Nowadays - besides his origin capability of being a dog for hunting – a Toller can perform in many activity areas like dog diving , agility, obedience or dummy work. They are also used as search and rescue dogs for their keen sense of smell, intelligence & working drive.

No matter what activity, a Toller always is focused and engaged on his tasks and has a strong “will to please” to its master.

In addition to his various capabilities, the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever has a special attitude. While being reserved towards strangers, his relationship to its master is very strong and deep. Nevertheless Toller are trying to sort out the borderlines and are very demanding due to their intelligence.

Also the appearance of the Toller is fascinating. The color is any shades of red with white markings on tip of tail, feet, chest and blaze. The Toller has was bred to retrieve from icy waters and has a water-repellent double coat of medium length with a soft dense undercoat. The coat may have a slight wave on the back, but is otherwise straight.

Toller are known to be very handy dogs, if they are sufficiently socialized and regularly offered activity. If not, Toller might search for “alternative” action and so it is strongly recommended for a potential owner to already bring along some experience with dogs.

The small red goblin will find its fulfillment in the joint activity with his master: Retriving, Obedience, Agility, dog tournament sport, dog dancing, mantrailing, tricks,…..

With a Toller by my side there is no path too long !
